Love of a Dog

I am not a dog therapist. I don't have any certifications in canine therapy, service dogs or therapy dogs. But, I will have to share that the facts about the comfort of a dog and how that affects people in therapy as being pretty wonderful. If you struggle with depression, dogs can offer comfort, companionship and love. They can soothe the often loneliness of living with the loss of a loved one. They are simply therapy in fur! In a recent survey by the Human-Animal Bond Research Institute, 74% of pet owners said having a pet improved their mental health. Many nursing homes have introduced pet time as therapy for their residents. Schools have implemented dog reading buddies to help children read. So, if you have a love of a pet, you totally understand the concept. If you don't have a love of a pet, try fostering if you are not sure that you are a match for long term pet care. Go to your local shelter or rescue group and see how you can help. Fostering dogs can be a short term solution to see if you would benefit from the love of a pet. So enjoy the love of a dog and get a little "fur" therapy.
